Recovery and wellness are not about what others believe is the right thing for you. It is about defining the meaning of these terms for yourself and setting goals so that your life can reach a point of sustainability and/or growth. For me, recovery is more related to myself or those who love and depend on me experiencing no negative effects from my substance misuse. I reached a point where I began to see my life developing into what I wanted it to become. I earned my GED and ventured out to earn the education that had been hampered for so many years by drug use (at age 30, had spent half my life stoned). Twenty-eight years later, I am a registered nurse with a Master's in Christian Studies and currently working on furthering my nursing degree. My true recovery began with God sending a young man to knock on my bedroom door questioning me about a smell coming from my room. I have reached a point where I can say I have been totally drug-free for many years.
I found my strength by turning to God. I would like to help you define YOUR definition of recovery and help you begin a path to sustaining and/or growing into that dynamic definition.
